Domestic violence affects every member of the family, including the children. Family violence creates a home environment where children live in constant fear. The emotional damage caused when one parent hurts the other often affects a child as significantly as if the abuse was directed at the child.
Peace: A Learned Solution (PALS), a domestic violence services program of Camden County Women’s Center in collaboration with Center For Family Services, is unique in its exclusive use of creative arts modalities to assist child victims of domestic violence in the healing process. Creative arts are children’s natural way of learning, developing, and expressing their feelings. Creative arts involve the use of play to communicate with children and to help children recover from trauma, learn more positive ways to cope, solve problems, and change negative behaviors.
The PALS program provides counseling and creative arts therapy for children who have witnessed domestic violence. The program utilizes music therapy, art therapy, play therapy and other expressive therapies to facilitate the child’s recovery from their traumatic experiences.
